All right. Now let's go back from a self promotion of one particular tool to a more general level this discussion used to be at.

I originally got involved in this topic because someone denounced image based testing. I'm glad the ongoing discussion has revealed that it's subject to conditions of a particular QA project, technology and personal expectations. That's more than I hoped for :-)

Just one more argument in favor of IBT which hasn't been mentioned yet. Some time ago I was involved heavily in localization (l10n) QA. We tested a bundle of software which was localized into a few European and Asian languages.

At some point we considered automation. We evaluated both OOT and IBT and we found out that OOT doesn't address most l10n issues. In particular, a button text in English translated to another language is often almost twice longer. The inevitable effect on any application GUI is that the components don't fit the window and many times completely disappear from the GUI.

Now, OOT tools were hopeless to detect such situations. They just tested whether the component exists in the component hierarchy but they weren't able to verify whether it displays correctly.

IBT tools were a bit better. As components are verified visually, a failure is detected when the component grows out of bounds. Not always of course - it depends on how the component image was created and the verification point configured. But still it was a better approach.

Just my very last 2 cents - busy time ahead of me!
