There is something about a ROM and estimation. I don't know if it's one & the same thing or different or interdependent.
I googled it and found that ROM may be Range Only Measurement. However, I could not make much sense out of it.
Any guess?

A ROM is a rough order of magnitude (ROM). A ROM estimate is based on high-level objectives, provides a bird's-eye view of the project deliverables, and has lots of wiggle room. Most ROM estimates, depending on the industry, have a range of variance from –25% all the way to +75%.

In some places it is known as OOM - Original Order of Magnitude.

I've seen people use ROM as an acronym for "Rough Order of Magnitude". It's basically an early estimate that gives a ballpark idea for whatever you are estimating.
That's my best guess.

Hi I would like to contribute my knowledge and the practice which we follow in our organisation.
ROM Estimation is just like the normal size estimation the only differenc eis that instead of LOC or KLOC or FP we use KiloBytes to estimate the ROM size for the project.
in our organisation before the start fo the project we estimate the RAM/ROM size required for the project.
and ROM - Read omly Memory and RAM- Random Access Memory
cheers Ramesh

A ROM is a Rough Order of Magnitude Estimate used during the very beginning of a project. There are specific techniques you can use to improve your ROM estimation. Too much to write here. Take a look at the following page for more information on ROM estimates:

LOL. 5 years after the original post, but still "too much to write".
