If this is the latest, latest release I haven't used it. But, if it's like the old versions it's under Options or the menu selection right above that. I think it's in the "Display" tab of the appropriate dialog.

How are they different?

Hmm. Did some more digging on this because I always thought the replay browser WAS the animated run.

From the HP forums:

"The VUGen replay window has been REMOVED in LR 11.5 for many of the protocols. It is gone for HTTP/HTTPS but available for RTE."

1. LR/PC 11
2. HTTP
3. No
4. Concurrent
5. n/a
6. New
7. 40k Web, 2k SOA, 1k DB
8. Yes
9. Server 2003

Animated Run hops through your code highlighting the step that is active.

The Run Time Viewer tries to show the web pages (or whatever depending on protocol) that are being returned.

(Opinion)

I am disappointed to read from the above that the new version removes the RTV capability from LR. With an understanding of the limitations of the RTV it was a useful, time saving tool.

And that may be the root of why it was removed. So many who use the tool do not have a cultivated architectural eye and cannot separate the HTTP stream portrayal from the display representation.

I have been witness to many support calls claiming that LoadRunner was not working correctly because of the run time viewer display (as well as some messages here over the years) and even some conversations from developers and others wanting to dismiss the results who attempted to use the run-time viewer to delegitimize the use of LoadRunner.

Just thinking on the support costs, it may have been cheaper to remove the RTV than to constantly respond to the support incidents and sales challenges related to the limitations of the viwer.

I rarely use it... If you need to see what the browser's doing learn to read html... It's not that difficult!!!!

Disappointing, I used to use the RTV frequently as a sanity check. ;-(

Yeah me too, disappointing indeed.

If they took it away just because there were too many problem tickets then they should've just done a better job of letting the users know the limitations.

Like just put a big giant message in red letters at the top of the thing that says: "THE RUN TIME VIEWER MAY NOT ALWAYS DISPLAY THINGS CORRECTLY SO IT SHOULD ALWAYS BE VIEWED WITH A GRAIN OF SALT". But probably in more technical terms...

These limitations are clearly noted in the documentation and the training class.....Oh never mind, that whole training and documentation thing is just a problem for far too many.

That seems to be the single biggest problem with performance testing: People with no training and no mentor being put behind the wheel because people think "The tool does most of the work". Which it obviously doesn't.

Sounds like there should be a campaign dedicated to informing companies around the world that performance testing isn't something you can just throw people into without training and mentorship.

Seeing as how LR is the industry leading tool, I would hope HP is trying to do something. Yes HP offers training and documents, but they should be SHOVING IT DOWN THE THROATS OF THEIR CLIENTS to properly train and mentor the people who are going to use the tool.

With java developers for example, if they aren't trained then it's more obvious, because the code they write simply won't work or will produce bugs. But with performance testing, a flawed script or incorrectly configured test may still run and then no one knows that the test was crap. It's just so easy to do a bad performance test and not realize it.

I wonder what is being done about this lack of training problem that is plaguing the performance testing industry?
