chasing the environment to test on
      #719707 - 11/12/12 02:10 PM

Hi everyone. I am in a company that has many other teams besides ours (6 devs and 1 qa), agile scrum. My time is mostly spent chasing environments. Once the US passes acceptance, it's my turn (verification) and testing that US takes hours, sometimes a full day with a majority of the time being spent trying to at least get to the pass acceptance level environment. Any suggestions?

There are around 10 - 20 builds (ext) that are checked in daily.

Any ideas?

Perhaps it's just me, but I'm confused.

What does "get to the pass acceptance level environment" mean?
Do you mean to say that you cannot access a server?

I mean that the BA sits with the dev and myself and he goes through the definition of done with the newly produced software. The BA marks the US as "passes acceptance" ( the US has to do at least what the DOD says it must do). When the dev checks in, and i download that build ext, this is where the problems start.

So your problem is the large number of builds everyday, that all need verifying? What are you verifying and why? It might be worth a fresh attempt at explaining the problem. What is the current operating process, what does the schedule look like and what bits are causing you problems?

Or scratch asking questions on here and explain it in your Scrum of scrums / retrospective? That's how Scrum is supposed to deal with its problems...

Ok. there are alot of builds everyday. The problem is that usually the developer would complete his US and the acceptance test would be done on his computer with the BA. After the acceptance, I would struggle with getting a similiar environment that the developer had on his computer, to test it myself.

What actually really worked for me yesterday is that when the developer completed his coding and had a functioning US. I demanded that the acceptance be done on my computer. This way i had the environment (with the help of the developer) and was able to start my testing right away after the AT and not waste any time with environments.

Why is it so difficult to "get the environment"? Does it change every day?

Or do you actually mean to get the new build, rather than the entire environment?

Pardon my ignorance but what is this "US" that you keep referring to?

Thank you. I had to ask because everyone and their brothers are using acronyms these days for everything.

No worries, it was rude of us to use the acronym without proper introduction, it's not a common abbreviation. This place isn't a cliche and we shouldn't make people feel ignorant just because we've had the opportunity to learn something 5 mins before!

Rosen, you seemed to have found a way to test now without having to wait for formal builds. Playing devils advocate, what happens if the changes you've seen are missed or bad merged in the build?
