Load test Facebook and other login schemes?
      #704109 - 04/12/12 11:34 AM

I was wondering if anyone has done any assessment on whether there is need to load test logins for their website, or (web) service, or (mobile) app, particularly in cases where their login is based on integration with third party services like:

* Facebook connect
* Google
* Yahoo
* OAuth (with 3rd parties, not internally)
* GitHub

Is integration with these services for login a factor to load test against or typically considered negligible? If not negligible, how have you designed load test against these? How about strategy for having many of such third party accounts to do logins, logouts, data syncs, etc.? Or do you simulate all that with a service that fakes the actual third party for login/logout, etc.?

If you are going to test against third parties then you need to coordinate your effort with them, including written permission to conduct the performance test.

Do you have an SLA for your third party?

If you do find an issue in performance, how will you report it, track it and fix it with the third party services?

Good point, didn't think of those. But my question was whether this was generally needed at all or not.

Surely others may have run into same question before?

I have yet to meet a public sandbox environment which was sized for load. If you call them to synchronize your efforts be prepared to spend long hours on the phone to get to the "right people" who can assist you and be prepared to pay for a specialized performance environment for your test.

Rule of thumb, if you don't have an SLA and the service you are using is free then you are pretty much on your own. For your test use the fastest authentication method that you can control and make sure that the functional side of the house is fully vetted on the third party integration.

By the way, Facebook has test users API specifically to help others test against Facebook.

But judging by the responses here, I'm assuming no one has dealt with it in terms of use for load testing.
