Need process suggestions for standardizing output
      #716853 - 09/22/12 10:28 AM

Hello world,

I need a push in the right direction. Currently, my QA team is doing manual testing by taking screenshots with the Win7 Snipping Tool, then pasting them along with a brief description of steps into a Word template we made. When testing is complete, we end up with a lot of Word docs showing the extent of our testing. This gets the job done, but it feels horribly inefficient for these reasons:

  • It takes a lot of time to fill out the template because we have to manually enter data into dozens of informational fields, setup internal hyperlinks, and delete sections of the doc which were not used.
  • Despite the template and repeated instruction, rarely are the finished documents consistently styled and "narrated" and linked similarly. People outside of QA viewing our docs now have to constantly interpret each of them.

So, we're looking for better methods. However, we're largely unfamiliar with the capabilities of current testing tools in the industry. Our first idea was to design an application where we could enter test notes and paste images stored from the clipboard into fields, then ultimately click a button to generate a Word doc at the end. Though, this sort of application probably already exists, so I thought I'd ask here first.

Are there any QA applications out there that will allow us to paste images from the clipboard into them, supply a description, add steps, then output a heavily-customized Word (or PDF or XLS or whatever) document for others to view?

    I appreciate the suggestions.

    Bump.

Are there any applications out there that will allow the tester to paste images from the clipboard into them, supply a description, add steps, then output content to a Word template?

Don't "Bump". That's bad behavior on a forum like this.

If you are using Windows 7, you might want to check out the Problem Step Recorder.

I have used the Problem Step Recorder in the past -- can't say it's worked out very well. The application very quickly bogs down as the steps accumulate, and it only captures screenshots when you click. Additionally, the screenshots are fullscreen which makes for massive file sizes when you have three monitors.

Does anyone know of a good alternative to the Windows Problem Steps Recorder?

Or, does anyone know of an application that will allow the tester to paste images from the clipboard into them, supply a description, add steps, then output content to a Word template?
