Has anyone used UML in designing test cases?
      #711461 - 07/04/12 08:01 PM

Hi All,

Just wanted to know if anyone has tried UML in preparing scenarios and test cases? eg, Activity diagrams, state diagrams, etc.
Also in our company i am trying to improve the process of preparing test cases so that we cover all possible areas and prepare better test cases.
So, was wondering if we could use UML or any other methodology. Please let me know your thoughts.

cheers,

Rochit

Full UML isn't used very often anymore, as more companies move to Agile, and even companies on Waterfall feel it's too much documentation.

Probably you'll still see state diagrams and architectural diagrams. Bot are helpful for preparing test scenarios. State you can use transitions as a basis for which scenarios you need at minimum. Architectural diagrams are useful for figuring out other scenarios like. But I don't think i've seen another company use UML as internal testing documentation.

Maybe what you're looking for is scenario based testing.

UML is used in model based testing. UML is used to create/derive test cases and other artefacts. I personally would not use UML.
