Testing Microsoft's Dynamics AX 2012 Applications
      #682137 - 08/15/11 09:10 AM

I've searched via Google, searched this forum and asked several vendors if their tool can be used to automate a Dynamics AX application. The only tool that I've found was Coded UI test which is found in Visual Studio 2010. The problem with this tool is that it appears to be a record and playback only tool.

We have QTP but it doesn't support AX applications. Does anyone know of a tool that supports AX automation that is more than a record/playback tool?

Actually, Visual Studio 2010 Coded UI is not just a record and playback. You can write new tests in "raw" code and modify recorded tests as well.

In which file can I do that, UIMap, UIMap.Designer? I haven't worked with Visual Studio before so I'm new to it.

I did some exploration in it as I was evaluating automation tools for my new employer. It's actually a combination of a number of things. The UIMap and UIMap.Designer just create the wrappers and such for the on screen components. You would also need to write other code to do the clicks and keyboard keystrokes and such. The way I learned my way through it is that I did a record and playback and then experimented... you know, the old "What happens if I change this line of code?" kinda thing to see what changes I can do.

Thanks for the quick reply Robert!

I did some of that and when I re-ran the code the modification was overwritten. Maybe I was changing the code in the wrong file. I'll give it another try.

Thanks again.

Hrm... I remember something about that modification getting overwritten... you need to create an override of the UIMap to contain your custom code. There's tutorials on how to do so on the MSDN site.

You might also want to post some more specific questions on the appropriate forum here (there's one for Visual Studio 2010 I believe)

I posted some in the Visual Studio forum but I got no responses.

I'll take a look at the override tutorial and see where that takes me.

Thanks again.

Okay, I installed Visual Studio 2010 Feature pack 2 that installs a graphical editor called UIMap.UITest. From there I can edit the properties and values but I don't see where I can add conditional logic. Anyone know how to get around this?

More information on the feature pack:

The response I got from Microsoft was "No, you cannot add conditional logic". Thanks
