Use of unix/linux in software testing

i am new to this forum, please help me on how to use unix in testing, how and where it is being used

This completely depends on the project you are trying to test & the requirements.

Where?
I am not a UNIX tester however it is used (along with Perl) for server side testing.

I am sure there may be few other places as well.
