508 compliant testing tools
      #296492 - 04/18/06 06:08 AM

I've already searched on the forums, and read all of the posts relating to 508 compliant testing. My question is, how reliable are the free websites that check your website??

I'm looking for a simple tool that could be used to test web based trainings for 508 compliance. Anybody have any recommendations? This is usually access through the an internet connection.

Slight change, these will be on a server, and not through the internet.

I know there is a free download of a JAWS reader. It will expire after so many days. If you google 'Free JAWS Reader' you can read more up on it.

JAWS Descriptions:
The most popular screen reader worldwide, JAWS for Windows works with your PC to provide access to todays software applications and the Internet. With its internal software speech synthesizer and the computers sound card, information from the screen is read aloud, providing technology to access a wide variety of information, education and job related applications. JAWS also outputs to refreshable braille displays, providing unmatched braille support of any screen reader on the market. Get started with training in DAISY format and a trial version of Freedom Scientific's FSReader DAISY player software.

While it isn't free, in the past I've had pretty good success with "Bobby" - http://www.watchfire.com/products/webxm/bobby.aspx

JAWS is, indeed, a good tool to check accessibility, but it's not designed specifically for that purpose, of course. I would also mention that the demo is fully-featured, and runs in 40-minute mode.

Disclosure: I work for Freedom Scientific, the creators of JAWS. More information on our products at www.FreedomScientific.com

Another website that I've used for it's tools is here http://www.ssbtechnologies.com/products/infocus/index.html

I was able to use a trial run for two weeks and it really was helpful.

Once I used Microsoft Developer Toolbar. You can download it from their website. It contains various validation tools. Similarly, one is available for Mozilla Firefox also. Not sure if it will work on your server thing, but too good to test Internet.

I worked on JAWS10.0 (Screen reader) and ImageViewer ( Screen magnifier) for VPAT 508 compliant testing.
