What would be a good strategy?
      #557238 - 03/17/09 12:07 PM

Here's my situation:
I'm responsible for testing an enterprise web application,
where there are lots of changes going into the project every week. Test cases are in the hundreds, which means the number of QALoad scripts will be somewhat close to that.

The problem is that we can't wait until the project stabilizes
and start doing performance testing due to shortage of headcount.

So current strategy is to create component level scripts first because some components will be stable before others.
And when the project comes to the feature complete milestone, it will be much easier to piece together a suite level testset to make the final test run.

One of the reasons we started using QALoad in the first place was because its recording ability. However, for a large size project, recording 10 or 20 scripts a week is still doable, but it is alot of work for parametrizing them(proper handling of dynamic data), and making them deployment agnostic(there are many key parameters that are deployment specific) which is another around of parametrization, and validate them in a multi-user scenario making sure they won't waste a 70-hour weekend test.

The extraction patterns is the thing that's killing me.
Reason 1: There are at least 5 pieces of dynamic data per script.
Reason 2: The extraction patterns can be different from build to build. can't reuse.
Reason 3: Some extraction patterns have deployment specific data in them. (sort of like parameterizing the parameter)
(I wish compuware supported regular expression pattern matching instead of left-right pattern thing).

As you can see, there are lot of manual work involved in testing with QALoad.

Have you guy faced the same or similar problems like this before? What's a good strategy? any ideas will be appreciated.

Look into Verify built-in function

Verify ( PAGE_TITLE, "This is the page title" );
Verify ( PAGE_TITLE, BEGINNING, "This is" );
