One more question - what was your response when he admitted he hadn't actually read any of your books ?

Phil,

Good question. I was actually not too surprised to hear that he hadn't read my books. Experience has shown, that few people actually read testing books. Often people prefer posting questions on user groups such as here on qaforums instead of reading books/material that's already available.

Phil,

In your book do you state or answer a question " Why shouldn't BA's Test?

Quick note - since this is an international forum and we are talking about reading testing books:
My book "The Art of Software Security Testing" has now been translated into Korean, for those of you who prefer reading it in Korean; and my book "Effective Software Testing" has now been translated into Japanese for the Japanese reader.
All other copies of my books are already available in Chinese, Russian, Korean and Japanese.
"Automated Software Testing" is also available in German, called "Software automatisch testen."

Why shouldn't BA's test...

Not that i wrote the book, nor did i read it. but i think i know some answers to that... So I feel like adding my 2 cents on that.

BAs can test, and they can do it well. No doubt about that. But:
- seeing they don't do it as a fulltime task they will not be able to gain the same routine / experience as someone who has testing as the fulltime job
- if the BA testing is the same as the BA having done the analysis, there's a bit of biased thinking and a lack of curiousity / independency in the testing
- if a BA is testing, he cannot do what he's actually supposed to do: Business / functional analysis

Does that sound about right?

Regards,

-alexx

btw, "Effective Software Testing" is a masterpiece. (I mean it! As a total QA greenhorn, that book helped me getting onto the right track quite quickly. Pragmatic and easy to read / understand - also language wise (I germanspeaking, book english )
