We all know that LR is a difficult tool to master - a common refrain is that there is not enough material out there. nothing can be farther from the truth. I have compiled the following to help people willing to learn more on LR to find everything in one place
----------------------------------------------------------------------
First start with your documentation on your PC.
Copy paste the file locations in your browser
Read First
What is Load Testing (10 Pages) C:\Program Files\HP\LoadRunner\help\Learn_More_Testing.pdf
HP LoadRunner Quick Start (30 Pages) C:\Program Files\HP\LoadRunner\tutorial\LR_QuickStart.pdf
Tutorial (150 Pages) C:\Program Files\HP\LoadRunner\tutorial\Tutorial.pdf
User Guides
Virtual User Generator (1420 Pages) C:\Program Files\HP\LoadRunner\help\vugen.pdf
Controller (552 Pages) C:\Program Files\HP\LoadRunner\help\Cntrl_pc.pdf
Analysis (676 Pages) C:\Program Files\HP\LoadRunner\help\analysis.pdf
Online Monitoring Reference (402 Pages) C:\Program Files\HP\LoadRunner\help\online.pdf
Additional Reading
Installation Guide (80 Pages) C:\Program Files\HP\LoadRunner\help\install.pdf
Monitoring Best Practices (248 Pages) C:\Program Files\HP\LoadRunner\help\Monitoring_BP.pdf
Flex Protocol Enhancements (12 Pages) C:\Program Files\HP\LoadRunner\dat\Flex.pdf
Thats 3580 Pages of information on LR - How many pages have you gone through? (I probably did less than 1500)
The above can also be found in Compiled Help Files. A couple like the Automation and Function reference are not found in the PDFs above, so it makes sense to list out the locations of these.
CHM Files
Everything from the above PDF listing C:\Program Files\HP\LoadRunner\bin\online.chm
Function Reference C:\Program Files\HP\LoadRunner\bin\FuncRef.chm
C Language function ref C:\Program Files\HP\LoadRunner\bin\c_language_FuncRef.chm
Automation Reference (dont even go there) C:\Program Files\HP\LoadRunner\bin\automation.chm
Well thats with the Documentation on your PC. -------------------------------------------------------------
Now for the online stuff. Remember, many of your queries can be solved by using the search functionality at any of the following sites. Make it a habit to devote time every week to go through the latest posts, and it will make quite a good difference in your learning path.

Hi Chid,
Good idea to pull this information together in one place for ease of reference. A useful link I found when getting up to speed with Sybase Ctlib scripting is as follows (this is mostly relevant for other 2-tier database scripting)

This document applies to Maximo Asset Management 7.1 and to all subsequent releases and modifications until otherwise indicated in new editions

If you are referring to the docs under "Read first", "User Guides", "Additional Reading" & "CHM" files then those docs are available upon installation of LoadRunner.
Other docs are accessible through www.

Someone needs to write a "LR Correlation for Dummies" I see serious demand for that sort of book. Don't know if how will HP react to that but just a thought.
Excellent thread btw. Compliments to the originator and other posters who provided the info.

Uh - see my comment in the chit-chat thread. There IS a "[LR] correlation for dummies" (correlation is required for all similar tools, not just LR) --- it is called the training materials! Correlation forms a significant part of the standard LR training course (not suprisingly.)
And, by the way, in regards to writing an "outside" publication, it would be almost impossible to create without infringing HP's copyrights, which have been fiercly defended ever since the Mercury Interactive days. Several people in this forum have tried to pursue avenues with first Mercury, then HP, to get permission to publish 3rd-party material, but it has always been stonewalled.

I agree.
Yeah that's what I figured. It's just that it gets frustrating with all the red tape and run around they give to go to another source...

OK, I have been in the Load & Performance Testing field since the mid 80's. I am on a new contract and having to lead the leaders on some performance testing issues. I am getting pushback right now on the number of VUsers the project wants to test to. Some thought process they are trying to venture down is, "why don't we just increase the amount of data each VUser puts into the system?" so they can reduce the number of VUser licenses. I once read a document that was very good at discussing and explaining the differences and plus/minus of number of users versus how much to throw at the system. The only thing that this feeble old brain of mine can honestly recall from that was that you really need to know some key timing information to truely get any information worth it. Since I can not find that document and am having a tough time articulating this whole concept to them, can anybody provide a link(s) to some info that would help?
On another side of this whole discussion was "Why do we need 1500 unique login ID's instead of having multiple concurrent sessions under the same ID?". I shudder at the thought of that one. I asked my boss if he thought our system could handle it if everybody on one floor of the building logged in under a single ID. To me, it screams potential contention and security issues.
This is all basic stuff and I have not had to "manage" the management through these issues in to many moons and would like some pointers to documnets/links I can pull from.
Thanks in advance,
Tom

Tom, Try googling "performance test professional" Theres a couple of articles on there...
I'm definitely in the 1 user id per concurrent user camp
Why? Contention, security (as you said) and caching
Yes it might be expensive, but it's a known cost... Unlike trying to fix ghost performance issues that not providing the correct data will undoubtedly throw up

Remember loadrunner is just a tool, if you don't understand performance testing , it's like trying to cut a piece of wood with a screwdriver... Maybe you can do it, but the results will be meaningless
