Piller: Some may think that this is a structural member that holds up a roof. It is really a thing that you lay your head on when you are sleeping.

Awl: Some may think that this is a sharp pointed instrument for poking holes. It is really a form of lubrication for internal combustion engines.

I always smile when I hear one of my testers (who hails from Texas) say to a colleague, "watch-iss!" I think he does it mostly for effect, since he is actually rather well-spoken in "real life."

I have at home 2 books called "Teach Yourself Southern" (parts 1 and 2." One of my favorites is "This draink needs more ars."

As you may be aware, modern speech synthesis software typically uses wave technology to form the voices, thus allowing for accents, male/female, young/old etc. The voices are typically given real names (Bobby, Dirk, Jane, etc - even Sujatha for an Indian female voice).

Recently a team from Nuance (suppliers of the RealSpeak voices, and a provider of synthesizers for our products) came to visit, and the Veep brought them over to meet my team. When they came to the cubicle of the Texan mentioned above, he charmingly offered to record the voice for "Bubba" if they were interested. Not being sure if he was serious, they equally charmingly declined!

(By the way, Nuance has a demo page, but it requires signup, so you may or may not want to go through that).

Police Jargon references.

Felony

When Billy Bob Ray George Jr's wife caught him messin around with her sister he fell on knee and started to pray.

Kilt

When Sheriff Bobby Joe came across a dead body he stated "boys it looks like she was kilt right ther" he also coined the term "KRT" for radio use

Arse
This here draink needs more arse.

And this redneck thing can be so ECONOMICAL in use. For example, instead of saying "Come and look at this," you can just say "watch'iss."

And while we are on pronunciation, why is "far" pronounced "fahr," and "war" is pronounced "wore?"

I may have found an audience!!!

The words are located here: http://www.sqablogs.com/JakeBrake/1136/

The audio files are linked to and stored at my website. Over the past 4 months there have been over 2,000 downloads of all the audio files from distinct IPs originating in China.

1) Will I be touring soon?
2) Will testers from that country have a southern drawl?
3) Who will understand them if they embrace this "vocabulary"?

I went on an interview in Amarillo TX years back and the recruiter came into the room around lunch time and asked me - Jeet Yet? I must have had this Deer in the headlight look on my face as I asked him to repeat himself 3 times before he proceeded to spell it out on a white board.
