QTP Book 2 - Descriptive Programming Unplugged
      #592030 - 09/20/09 11:31 PM

I have started working on the next of the unplugged series and wanted to have feedback of the readers before hand. The book would be based on Object identification, Object Repository concepts and descriptive programming

- What you need in the book?
- What different from the QTP Unplugged book?
- Any other suggestions?

It sounds good. If you see the old posts, most of the newbies are asking more light on "FrameWork". Can you add one chapter in your new book? I believe detailed and deep explanations are not required. Simple login and one record insertion is enough. One sample and easy script will enough for one framework. By using that baseline approach we can extend our knowledge.

Thanks,

Tarun,

I would include a chapter on object identification/AJAX and the misconceptions around this area. You may also want to include extensibility and the new QTP accelerator.

Good idea tarun..

would you be able to include some stuff about the SDK provided by HP for the Extensibility..I get a lot of questions from my previous employers and team about it..everyone assumes and its a misconception that its a one click thing and you can recognize any custom object on the screen

Could you also include the difference between inline descriptive programming and object oriented DP and why is on better that the other..This is again stemming from peoples assumptions that DP means only inline

This is something I would also like to get a hands on. This topic was earlier not in my planned scope for this book. But as you right suggested, I will try to see if I can get some good views out on this as well

Mark, What exactly do you mean by that?

Also, just a message to others if they can provide any inputs on below topics on below points that would be great help

- How you manage ORs in project
- How do you use DP in projects
- What challenges have you faced and how have you resolved them?
- Any innovative way to use OR and DP?
- Samples of extensibility they have created for Java, .NET and web

I mean where objects that require addins (e.g. .Net, Java, WebServices etc.) perhaps giving examples of DP with these objects may help people.

Hi Tarun,

Also include chapter if possible for Mainframe ( TE ) apps, as thats also a big challenge nowadays, and we had a hard time automating such kind of apps, which required run time objects creation ( OO DP).

I am glad to hear this Tarun. I have the unplugged book and it is coming in very handy.

What I would find really helpful would be troubleshooting ideas when an object is not found. I run into this quite a bit where I cannot seem to figure out what is wrong. The DP code seems to be correct, but when I run the script it results in the object not being recognized.

I know there are probably strange little things with QTP and objects and descriptive programmin, that you could shed some light on from a troubleshooting perspective.

Look forward to the new book.
Christine

Tarun,

I would probably include a chapter (or two) on:

For Beginner/Intermediate Users:
+ Creating descriptions on the fly (an extension to this article)
+ Concepts of regex/wildcards and if they leave a (an added) performance footprint
+ Alternatives to Object Spy and their reviews
+ Background and importance of TO and RO properties.
+ Common pitfalls with DP (you can include why its uncessary to include 10 descriptions where only 1 would do the trick etc, if its the best alternative when performance is the most important criteria etc.)

For Intermediate/Advanced Users:
+ DP libraries
+ Efficient ways of working with parent objects
+ Simplying object hierarchies (this article talks about it with Siebel objects)
+ Storing descriptions in tables (Excel, DataTable, Access, SQL Server etc.) and their pros/cons
+ Storing descriptions in a collection.

Have to agree, definitely could use some tips on how to get QTP really working smoothly with AJAX. We have the plugin for it but still have trouble. Some ideas on FLASH would be helpful too, or at least a listing of any options regarding QTP when it comes to Flash.

thanks

Hi Tarun,

I have extensive experience in Manual but I am novice in Automation. Can you express the need from manual to automation and vice versa? I didn't had a chance to have a look at current QTP unplugged series.

Can you please highlight the need for automation?

Hi Tarun,

Its great to see that you are concentrating on object identification and object repository. Could you include atleast a brief idea about how to recognise the objects in all dev environments.

I have this web login page and I need to automate it as part of my job. Here is the link:
https://www.aceproject.com/demo/server01/login.asp?lang=EN
I tried to automate it but qtp recognise it.

Please see my post in this forum regarding this.

Need some help about this, pls.

Hello Tarun,
Mainly if you focus on Framework Part in "Easy way" and very Depth sytle with example so that each & every newbie can understand very well.

About your "Knowledge Inbox" I have learnt lot from there specially DP......

Please focus on all types of Framework.

With regards,

All the best Tarun...
I would like to see
- what properties to use & what not to use based on the object type & common scenarios (mostly what we have seen is people take the recorded script as the baseline and does not change/ selct the properties correctly)
- Working with objects in table ..I think you already have lots of articles on it...
- usage of regular expressions
- Addin extensibility.
- using .object and accessing the properties
- If we can have a section on TestAdavantage that will be great...
- Using co-ordinates, index , low level recorking etc (we may be forced to use it some times)

Kalesh

Your first books is costs approx $45 which is quite high in India. Is there any Indian print available for the same? Also can you provide a couple of sample chapter so that person like me can take decision whether to buy book or not.

Hi Tarun,

All the best for your second book.

For your second book, if you can put something on connecting HPQC through QTP in regards to uploading the attahment, results, filtering the results in HPQC after the QTP Script has been run. Similiar stuffs related to HPQC and QTP.

Also, On the Framework front, I would like to have something which provides details from implementing the framework from start to the end. A complete process.

I brought my copy of "Quicktest Professional Unplugged" to our VIVIT Hewlett Packard Users Group Regional meeting and it was a hit. Aside from the VIVIT chairman (who also has a copy), no one there had ever seen or heard of anything like this before, and they were excited that such a book is available.

So I'm hoping that I generated a couple more sales for this book. And I'm very much looking forward to DPU'D.

Tarun,

I have followed some of your aid for many in this forum and i am very impressed your not only interested in helping those who you can learn from but instead go out of your way to aid others in aspects that are not fun to drill into.

Your a hero for doing this and any book you make would be worth every cent many times over.

I am certain it would pay for itself within hours of having it. How explicitly you resolve matters would soon make such a reference a "must have" text book for any serious qtp users.

Your knoweldge is so extensitve and highly respected here (which is No 1 forum for qa ... and QTP was voted no 1 functional testing tool) it may be possible for you to come to some publishing agreement with HP/QTP to include your work as part of their own standard set of documentation.

If they do I so I hope you insist they title it

"Snipers guide to troubleshooting"

Some topics that might be nice to cover include:

1. Using DP to manipulate Browser objects created at runtime (ex: CreateObject("InternetExplorer.Application") )

2. Describing an object by what's "around" it. For example, suppose my XML looks like:

<div>
<hr>Section 1</hr>
<p>Blah blah blah...</p>
</div>
<div>
<hr>Section 2</hr>
<p>Mumble mumble</p>
</div>

I would like a way to quickly state "Give me the DIV element that contains an HR with the text 'Section 2'". Is there a standard solution for this?

Hi Tarun,

It would be great if your new book can include topics about mix use of class and dp.

In addition, is it possible to host some practice pages so readers can try examples from the upcoming new book?

Hi Tarun,

I am good follower of knowledgebox.com, fisrt i should say excellent, for your extra skills, thirst and thriving for new water always. Because you dont see the things by UI(User interface), rather you took the other direction, how they are made and how they are working or getting coordinated.

My Suggestion for your new book:

Why dont we try to include chapter on QTP mechanism of identifying the objects.
For example : To identify the browser driven apps, qtp should have used shell.application and stored the objects and the roadpath of the object what we added to the OR.

like wise whats the mechanism for windows, swf objects ....

I hope, Every one understood my view ..

I really enjoyed reading your book. Its awesome for the people who are new to QTP.

Will it include information on how to build Custom Libraries? In particular building custom libraries to enable QTP to recognise .Net or Java objects.

Please don't take it negatively. If the book is only related to DP then i would discourage it.

To me ...

a) Descriptive programming is when you dont trust the object repositry to be recognise the test object in question, a VERY common problem even for Object Repositry "masters" or when you want explicit control over object handling.

b) Coupled with regular expressions, descriptive programming is awesome in functions when exceptions are raised or recovery scenarious are triggered where you want something more intellegent than "log this and abort test iteration"

d) If the book saves you 1 hour of frustration it pays for itself the same day

e) If the book leads you to better coding practices generally it pays for itself infinitely by increasing script robustness and re-use.

f) Having multiple books for the tools your using on your desk makes you look like a test proffessional, quickly -

g) Having a solid book handy to throw at colleagues when they give you lip is satisfying and therapudic, furthermore books dont classify as improptu weapons and most importantly, their use in office disputes implies the absense of pre-meditated assult to management so thoroughly they may even be inclined to deem such outbursts of expression as an acceptable and healthy method of sress release (in which case having more books about your office gives one a considerable logistic advantages over those who dont)

Hi Tarun,

I wanted you to know that I bought your book from Barnes & Nobles last week ($44.99). I went to the store but they did not have a copy of it and they were gonna mail it. So I have not read it yet.

I have been using QTP for over 5 yrs now. I bought the book so I will have a physical reference for QTP, and in part to confirm that the methods and techniques I use are at least within the norm... LOL.. aside from the normal measure that it works....LOL

I'm curious how much coding is available for communicating between QTP and QC... specially excel or report importing and exporting... if you could point me to some comprehensive and wholesome link.... will be greatly appreciated.

Hi Tarun,
Can you be kind to also include Descriptive Programming with Dot Net objects(specially Smart Client),which QTP is not able to identify even with WPF Add in.
Recently faced the same issue, for which i followed Low Level or WScript (Send Keys) method.

Vinod, DP only works on what QTP can recognize. So if QTP can't recognize a object then DP also won't work in that case. But yes I will try and keep all my practical experience in this

Tarun,

I own a copy of your book Quicktest Professional Unplugged and I believe even got some good sales for you due to my recommendation to my friends...and team members, but I want to thank you personally for writing a good book on the subject. Also, if you ever need an editor, I would be interested in giving you a feedback, since I know some of the errors with original book.

I would like to recommend two have a chapter for coding in Firefox environment. The simple reason for this is I do not believe there are enough documentation out there and all I am seeing is guesswork type recommendations.

I believe that it is a strategical flaw in HP/Mercuries part to not to pay enough attention to Firefox, since it is becoming the leader of the browser world (if not already). When I checkit last time FF had 45-49% share of the browser market and IE lost a few point and now they are down to 40-45 % at the most...Remaining 10% is shared between Chrome, Netscape and others...

So a strong chapter on Firefox could definitely be an eye opener for most of us.

Again, thank you for your leadership in writing the first book and if you ever need an editor, I would be more than happy to devote my time (free of charge for labor hours except one copy copy of finished work )

Respectfully,

Monster_energy

Harjeet, I know that this is one topic that everyone is looking forward to. But I don't think it is something that a book on DP will include. This book is specifically based on objects, identification and manipulation.

This book will eliminate any doubts that exists today regarding QTP's object identification

Hi Tarun,

If possible include the below topic
1. Things should not be considered for automation
2. How to do a feasibility study on the selection of framework (whether to go for Keyword Driven, Data Driven, Hybrid or BPT).
3. How to inprove the performance of the script (Reduction in the Execution time)
4. Error handling (Not only "on error resume next", better if we have detaild error handling real time scenarios.
5. The parameters to be considered while doing automation project estimation.

Hi Tarun,

I think you can write deeply about how the Local machine explain the QTP scripts. And I really wanna your books can writed as detailed as the Java books. And tell us how the QTP relative with system exchange;

I have an issue:here, hope you can kindly solve...

I use QTP connect the QC; and I wanna set the current directory to path of QC, the code as following:

Set wScript = CreateObject("WScript.Shell")

wScript.CurrentDirectory ="[QualityCenter] Subject\FAIT Demo\ Fuction Library"

but when I run QTP, it reported "General Run Error"

Thank you

yangguo, Please post your issue in a new thread. This thread is for discussion of the book only.

I know there have been many feedback by different forums members but I just wanted to re-iterate that this book would be totally focused on objects, identification methods, properties and methods.

Hi Tarun,

Your volume one for qtp unplugged is excellent for freshers. As in your next volume you are concentrating on Descriptive programming and Object identification, it would be very helpful for newbies if you can cover one real time application .(How to code in real time a complete application)would be very helpful as there would be no recording and no checkpoints in real time .
We need to know how coding happens in real time.

Vinesh

Hi Tarun,

Greetings, n you are doing a great job. I got the first volume of QTP unplugged. It is a wonderful book.

In the second volume i'm expecting a chapter with full automated framework of a live web application. Think that will give a brief overall idea on where to start and where to end...

I am sorry. I never worked on QTP in my career, but is this book worth buying? (by this I mean any book)

Coz, with the documentation standards Mercury had set, I think most of the queries can be solved. Plus we have various forums where you can get your niggles solved.

I think this book is useful for people who'd be entering into QTP (coz I myself face difficulty in getting hands-on for QTP).

Please correct me if I am wrong.

Thats good to hear ... Good Luck Tarun.

It would be good , If a beginner or intermediate QTP User can get information on
1)ADODB,Wscript and how actually QTP plays its role in doing database testing ...
2) Mercury Device reply and how it can be used.
3) Creation of Objects and How to use them.
4) How to communicate to QC using QTP and some best practices.

Great going Tarun,
The only issue I am facing in DP is working with External files.
Can you throw some light on this topic. Specifically debugging external vbs files.
Here is my prob for which I am still not able to find a solution.

Thats a great idea Tarun... what i would like to see in the next book would be:
1. Detailed info on the different types of Frameworks and how to create a stable framework. I am not expecting the code but the theory of it
2. Some details about descriptive programming, where and how we can use it
3. WSH objects... this is something i never understood.. why, when where,,, i am totally blank

Thank you very much for your efforts... keep posting... it is of great help to us...

Offer for Proofreading

Tarun,

While my experience with QTP is still burgeoning, I'm an excellent proofreader, and if your book is not yet completed, I'd be more than happy to provide myself as a free proofreader. Just trying to pay back (and forward) for all of the assistance (and patience!) I've already received from this group.

Hi Tarun,

I ordered the 1st book just last week from Amazon (it is on it's way). Are you going to be selling supplemental books so that owners of the 1st book do not need to purchase new releases?

I'm more interested in learning advanced automation concepts/methodology and real world example code using QTP versus the features of QTP.

For instance, I hated that function parameters can not be optional. I need to update all my function calls if I updated my function definition to include one more parameter. Then after a few gigs, I found out a work around using CreateObject("Scripting.Dictionary")as shown below:

'Set oParam = CreateObject("Scripting.Dictionary")
'oParam.Add "optsPopVerify" , "Pop"
'oParam.Add "optsProperty" , ""
'oParam.Add "optsFileName" , ""
'oParam.Add "optiRow" , ""
'oParam.Add "PageSize","200 Rows"
'oParam.Add "Add",""
'oParam.Add "FilterResults",""
'oParam.Add "AssignToCaptiveBroker",""
'oParam.Add "ExportResultsTo_xls",""
'oParam.Add "ExportResultsTo_pdf",""
'oParam.Add "optsRC_VERIFICATION_PARAMETER",""
'PopVerify_TasksViewTasks oParam
Function PopVerify_TasksViewTasks (ByVal MasterParameter)
' more code
'End Function

Pete

Really liked your first edition.

Going further, please add how to automate UNIX system using QTP. I am having a real tough time reading text from QTP screen. If you could include it in the book, it would be great help.......

More examples and a better understanding of the basics ofv DP. I have been trying to understand DP for an object SysListView32 that for whatever reason wont be found in my OR. I used DP to create a new object for SysListView32 in my global OR, but now QTP created a new SysListView32 object in my local OR and durring a Run the object is still not located? Yikes ;-)

Thx for the help ;-)

Hi Tarun,
I read your book and found it interesting ,but what i expect in your next release of QTP unplugged is more of handling Objects in applications of different technologies like Java , Dotnet, Web Etc...
handling critical Infragistics controls in Dotnet, JavaTree in Java based applications, Grids, Table and many more critical objects.
Maximum usage of the Objects Native properties of different technologies and so on.
Also I would like see you exploring QTP dotnet and Java Accelerators .

In QTP 11 there is a new feature called Visual Relation Identifiers. Would you include information on what the difference between Visual Relation Identifiers and Descriptive Programming is? And when it is best to use Visual Relation Identifiers and when it is best to use Descriptive Programming? Thanks

One of the new guys in my team bought your book in a while ago, it very good to teaching new users, we train our own teams for the banking automation, we start off with basic course, then give them a project and with your book they are able to work through it well. I notice your posts very helpful on this forum, unlike others you try actually give an answer or point them in right directions.

There are lots of very good contributors on this forum Paul, giving a little time to try and help fellow QTP members. Perhaps when you have used the forum for a few months more you will see that.

- What you need in the book?
- What different from the QTP Unplugged book?
- Any other suggestions?

================

I need the information about web automation testing.

How to user QTP, utilize descriptive programming to create/modify objects to operate the web element.

And reference about web properties, as we know, when use Object Spy to check the properties, for example, it display "class name" in Properties column, "web element" in value column.

But to create a web element,
==========
Set objAccDIVDesc = Description.Create()
objAccDIVDesc("micclass").value = "WebElement" ;
===========
we use "micclass" as class name.

why is that? I am confused about those difference.

I will also suggest same. Please write a detailed chapter on "Step by Step Framework development".

For eg-How we create different folder fot test data, object repository, config file , Log file, Test results , Scripts etc and how do we link driver script to pick up details from each folder and run the required automation script.
