Re: What are the basic things to be tested in a website?

Items to test:

- All links are valid (both internal and external)
- All forms work, and have data validation
- All info is present and correct
- "alt" is used for all non-text items (such as graphics)

You could probably write a book on the subject, and I think a few already have

For links, try Xenu. I haven't tried other web testing tools.

Re: What are the basic things to be tested in a website?

Thanks Thina,

It is a shopping website. It has nearly some 25 pages. The major function of the site is displaying the various products of the merchant and provision for purchase of goods. Every customer can register himself, so he gets a login id.
Please suggest me what to test for the login module and sales pages.

Thanks
Murali

Murali:
For Login Module testing:
- Security - make sure it's encrypted!!
- Multiple wrong passwords - should lock you out.
- Forgotten password - does it e-mail pswd to you?
- Character Validation
- Login ID correctly assigned to a customer

For sales pages (I'm assuming it's for a checkout process...?):
- Security testing - again, make sure it's encrypted
- Taxes calculated correctly
- Shipping calculated correctly
- Multiple quantities of an item
- Any discounts for multiple items

Obviously, this list is NOT exhaustive, but it may give you something to start with.

Good luck!

Apart from the functionality of the website, what are the preliminary features a website should have? (Like metatag.)

Re: What are the basic things to be tested in a website?

You might take a look at the W3C's Web Content Accessibility Guidelines. You may be required to implement some or all of their suggestions, depending on your intended audience.

Beyond that, any good web development book or website will have "best practices" guides that may prove useful.

The main thing to remember is that these types of things are not rules so much as guidelines. It may prove difficult to convince a developer that an "alt" parameter for every image is truely useful.

Not quite sure what you are asking here. I don't know if I would list metatag as a "feature", per say.

Can you expand a bit??

Thanks.

Re: What are the basic things to be tested in a website?

If you're expecting (or hoping for) a large number of users on the site, then some kind of performance testing is important. You don't want the site to fail as soon as it becomes successful. See the Performance Test forum for more info.
