Can any one explain me what is web application and how it can be tested?
Re: web application
Your using a web application, since the QAforums is a web application.
Essentially its a software application that is accessible by an HTTP user agent(web browser). It usually consists of a three tier environment (a web server, an application server (i.e. php, asp, cold fusion, jsp, etc.) and a database server. Technically there could be a 4th tier to consider which is the client (web browser) as well. The application can be spread out over multiple web servers, application servers and databases as well. (The books below should explain this better than I have here)
AS to how it can be tested, there have been books written about this, so I am going to refer you to http://www.qalinks.com/Books/Web_Testing/ and I would suggest the Web Testing Handbook by Steven Splaine or Testing Applications on the Web by Hung Nguyen. I don't think I could cover web testing in this post and do it justice, there is quite a bit to it.
I would also suggest using the search in the upper right hand corner of this page, I think you will find quite bit of information. Also see http://Stickyminds.com and/or http://SQATester.com.
