Generic Installation Test Test cases needed

Hi everyone, I need to write general test cases for installation test and I am wondering where I could find material that would help me in writing this or if anyone has already got a generic test cases done for this, I would love to use it as a reference.

    Thanks.

Check microsoft's website. There they have a "Win logo program" where a program needs to have certain attributes to get Win Logo.
In that document MS has explained that what installation test a software must pass to get win logo.
U can take that as Ur start point.

Re: Generic Installation Test Test cases needed

A good tool to check for an installation is InCtrl4 or InCtrl5 (In Control) from ZDNET.com.
This utility will image a drive and then after install will create a difference map based on files added, deleted, changed. It will also capture the Registry entry changes.
This tool can be automated via batch files, or if you want with a test tool (more work, but doable).
A good thing to do with this is to create install images of target systems with Ghost or DiskClone. This way you can roll back to baselines quickly.
Another good thing to do is find out if the installation program has a script capability. InstallShield does and I have used it in conjunction with InCtrl to setup and "automate" the install process. This way I had repeatable tests.

For installation testing you need to look at the following.

    New Install
    Typical Install (Client and Server)
    Custom Install (Client and Server)
    All components
Some components (same components as typical)
    Some components (different from typical)
    Minimum Install (Client and Server)

    Upgrade Install
    Typical Install (Client and Server)
    Custom Install (Client and Server)
    All components
Some components (same components as typical)
    Some components (different from typical)
    Minimum Install (Client and Server)

    Error Handling
Low disk space or full disk space condition (you need to test the boundaries)
Overwrite of older files (especially of windows system files -- like MFC42.DLL)
    Overwrite of newer files
    Overwrite of Read-Only files
Install aborted during file copy (does it remove and cleanup, or just leave junk)
Install to a network drive (does the install handle the Universal Naming Convention -- not a mapped drive)
Install path is very long and/or contains spaces in name (this can be a killer on older systems)
Re-install (can it do this and not whack itself in the head)

Uninstall (you'll be amazed at what gets left behind)
    Full Uninstall (remove everything)
Partial Uninstall (remove only your components and kill the shortcuts to them)

    Install configurations
    Client
    Target PC
    Network share for PC
    Client Install from Network
    Target PC
    Server
    Install at server
Install to server from remote console

    Licensing
    Server license
    Client license on PC
    Client license from server
    Site license model
    Time lock license model
    Floating license model

    Compatibility
Windows 9x (Win98 SE or WinME)
Windows NT 4 Workstation and Server(yeah they still exist)
    Windows 2000 (Professional and Server(s))
    Windows XP (Home and Professional)
Compatibility with 3rd party components (MDAC comes to mind, this one can fubar you)

    Hope this helps.

Re: Generic Installation Test Test cases needed

I've just found a great tool called ExamDiff Pro. It's a simple tool to use and comparing files and directories for differences, but it has been a revelation during installation testing. It allows me as a QA manager to verify quickly that the configuration delivered for installation testing matches with the configuration of the current test environment. I can identify any discrepancies quickly and feedback to config management before I start wasting time testing the installation of an incomplete system. Best of all it costs $35 and it keeps the developers on their toes.
