Automated Testing of large reports
Has anyone tried to test reports with a testing tools?
My company is into testing, we have tested about 100 software applications so far. We have carried out couple of testing jobs on Client - server, OO based applicatons. We also use lot of automated tools. However, when it comes to reports, we cannot 100% rely on automation, it requires some manual / automated inputs.
If anyone has tried Winrunner/ Ratioanls tools, please let me know?
Re: Automated Testing of large reports
I don't quite understand your question. There are plenty of GUI automation tools that will input data. Is the problem that the data to be inputted can't be determined prior to running the report?
I have worked on a web reporting project before and we tested the web reports using silk test. We had a command line interface where the admin could execute the report or we knew what URLs would be built after the inputs so we just went directly to that URL. The other part of the automation was testing the same thing except that we used record/playback on the website. When testing reports there are a couple of things to consider - where is the data coming from? database, flat files - is that data accurate? - Are their any dates in the reports? - if not, can I just compare the HTML results from one automation run to the next.
There are definately ways to have the automation tool input data. I have a feeling that you are talking about a specific issue with data input. Anyway, if you let me know the specific issue maybe I can help with an idea on how to automate or partially automate the task.
