Testing Email System - How much is enough

    Hi,

I am testing an email system.
The data I have is as follows:

    100,000 seperate email addresses.
    20,000 seperate domains.

How much testing of these seperate domains do you feel is enough?
Taking into consideration that I have 15,00 domains that only have 3 or less email addresses for that domain.

    When is enough, enough ?
Is there any sort of rule of thumb when testing with such data?
Or a % that I should adhere to.

Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated.

    Never ending emails !!!!

I think what yuo have is enought if not more than enough...

Generally speaking you want to see the functions work, work for an extended period of time, handle load, and variable size attachments (small-large) possibly encoding of sound/images etc...

But what you have in terms of numbers is enough... As to handling domains, I think it's primarily the job of the DNS server, but you might want to vary the domain name size (small to long), weird chars ("-") or even international domain names (other languages which is a new feature these days)

    Hope it helps...

Well, if you have some way to automate the testing, then performing as many of these conmbinations as possible would not be too extreme. However, if you plan on doing this manually then I would recommend trying to categorize your domains and addresses in some way if possible and pick a few out of each category.

I agree. This is only a small point, but be sure that the date and timestamp in the emails received is correct.

It's a constant here in our shop - the time on the server is never right until I flag it. I guess because "oh that's nothing, it can be fixed in a sec" - but it always does does need a fix
