Regression Testing Content Changes
I'm a long time reader and first time poster here. Since I moved into the role of QA Manager at my company over a year ago I've used this site as a resource for many of the questions I had when learning this position. Now I'm a bit stumped on a problem.
One of the websites my group is responsible for testing has become one of the major 'projects' for the company. Accordingly there have been frequent updates, sometimes occurring 2 to 3 times a week. We're running into a problem where an issue needs to get fixed quickly and the changes made in a previous release are overwritten.
This site is written in .NET but pretty basic. There are about 15 pages with approximately 10 links on each page. There is one form on each page with 5 fields on it. This should be pretty easy to maintain, and until the frequency of updates increased it was. We were able to get away with a lot of exploratory testing instead of regression testing and it worked, but with shorter deadlines its made it more difficult to effectively test the site.
I'm looking for an automated tool that I could use to identify all content changes to the site from the previous release. We do have a staging environment we can use to compare to production, but I was hoping to find a software that could scan the content of each page and save a snapshot of it, then when we make a change do a comparison of the changes and highlight or list any differences.
We're currently doing manual testing to verify any new functionality added to the site and that works fine. We're also doing manual exploratory tests for browser compatibility and link verification and since the site is so small that works fine. What we need is a way to verify that all content that wasn't supposed to have changed really didn't.
Any advice or recommendations would be much appreciated.
Re: Regression Testing Content Changes
I just wanted to clarify a bit more on what I'm looking for because it was late and I left something out. I've been trying to use File Comparison applications like WinMerge and that seems to be similar to what I'm looking for. The problem is that we may not have the time to open both versions of every page on the site to verify there were no changes. I'd like to find something a little more automated that I might be able to assign the URL for the staging environment, then the URL for the production environment and have it compare the assigned pages and give me a report of the pages that have changed. Or if I can't compare two URLs maybe I can find one that will allow me to download the HTML from both sites and do a diff on both folders.
I know there are a whole lot of file comparison tools out there, so it may be a feature in one of them. I just haven't been able to find one that does this thus far. If anyone is familiar with an application like this I'd welcome any recommendations of software to research.
