Referrence documents or videos for MTM 2012
I am new to MTM and trying to evaluate this tool for one of our testing project requirement.
Could any one share links or videos to be referred to explore MTM 2012.
And would like to know how this tool is beneficial over QC or any other popular test management tool.
This link goes to a search I ran for TechEd presentations involving Microsoft Test Manager: TechEd North America 2013 | Channel 9
The three results should give you a good overview of the tool.
Some things to consider: MTM is not a standalone tool. It does not work without Team Foundation Server. If you do have a Team Foundation Server environment, MTM is a powerful, flexible way to define and manage test cases. I'm using it now and I find it easy and intuitive. The ability to hook into a defined set of test environments if TFS has configured them (the test environments are virtual machines managed using a lightweight license of Microsoft's HyperV virtualization tool) is particularly handy for things like multiple operating system support testing and managing automation.
I haven't used QC - the only other test management tool I have any experience with is TestLink - so I can't speak to that, but I do like the ability of MTM to offer a quick and dirty "automation" in the form of an action recording which can be used for diagnosis or reproducibility.
Can you give us an idea on how Automation with MTM is different from Coded User Interfaces Test in Visual Studio.
And which one do people prefer for Automation (if both are different)
MTM is more geared towards test *management* and manual testing than automation. MTM's automation is really basic record/playback which can be converted to a Coded UI Test in Visual Studio and made more robust.
Most people I know will recommend using Visual Studio Coded UI to create automation and MTM to manage testing - once everything is configured, it is possible to run Coded UI tests from MTM.
Info you gave will be really helpful.
You can compare QC with TFS not with MTM.
MTM is used to execute tests, planning your test execution, test reports, lab center etc..
