USC Center for Software Engineering Presents
Los Angeles Software Process Improvement Network

Wednesday March 13, 2002

"Process Requirements for Safety-Critical Systems and

Speaker: Nancy Leveson, MIT

The normal software engineering process is not adequate for safety-critical software. Changes, augmentation, and different emphases are required to ensure that software will have acceptable safety. These process changes must be coordinated with the overall system safety process. This talk will describe the differences (and sometimes conflicts) between processes designed to enhance reliability and those required to ensure safety and outline the requirements for a safety-driven and human-centered software development process.

Nancy Leveson is Professor of Aerospace Software Engineering
at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Previously
she was Boeing Professor of Computer Science and Engineering
at the University of Washington. She has served as Editor- in-Chief of IEEE Trans. on Software Engineering and on the Board of Directors of the International Council on Systems Engineering. She received the ACM 1999 Allen Newell Award for "establishing the foundations of software safety" and the 1995 AIAA Information Systems Award for "developing the field of software safety and for promoting responsible software and system engineering practices where life and property are at stake." Professor Leveson was elected to the National Academy of Engineering. Dr. Leveson is an ACM Fellow, a member of the Board of Directors of the Computing Research Association, a member of the ACM Committee on Computers and Public Policy, and a consultant to the NASA Aerospace Safety Advisory Panel. She is author of the book, "Safeware: System Safety and Computers," Addison-Wesley, and has been involved in a large number of safety-critical industrial projects.
