Re: difference between usability and userinterface testing

    Hi Satish
    As per my knowledge
The Usability testing is without giving the prior information to the tester or user how much he should be able to understand from the screen or the system.
You can test the usability by
Giving the seminar on the system to the experienced testers and take the suggestions or
you can give the system with the documentation to the users and without the presence of the technical person check whether user can install and use the software.

User Inter face testing where you can consider the technical part as well
Say If you are testing one screen which is having 4-5 buttons and about 10 edit boxes and 2 combo boxes

You will check the buttons enable disable
    Validations on the Edit boxes
Navigation through the Next and previous buttons
Combo boxes and list boxes properties

Also you will have to consider the pixel size like 400*600 or 640 *780 and so on

Please check with the different types of monitors as well.

Usability testing is how testing in the real scenario how the users will be able to use the system with the documentation available.or it can be defined as how comfortable the users are in using the system.

Userinterface testing involves checking the GUI look and feel, field level validations etc

    Validation -- Testing
    Verification--QA

Re: difference between usability and userinterface testing

These both fall under two different types of testing: functional and non-functional testing.

GUI testing is functional testing - ensuring that all interactions, navigation, links, pop-ups, content, etc all work as required. Every aspect of the interface must be tested and this can usually be done by developing tests based on your product's functional requirements (if these are documented).

Usability testing is non-functional testing, which involves testing against non-functional requirements such as standards or development guidelines. These non-functional requirements place certain design contraints on the development activity, but don't actually explicitly state how the product should function.

Usability requirements are typically based around some popular guidelines, such as Nielsen's "Ten Heuristics" or Schneiderman's "Eight Golden Rules". These will typically be things like design consistency, ease of use, informative feedback, easy reversal of actions and learnability - all things that you should test by observing actual user behaviour in the field, not by a tester from your company.

Searching on Google for terms like software user trials, software focus groups, usability testing, user testing should all yield information on standard practices for this type of testing.

Re: difference between usability and userinterface testing

    Hi,
I want to test if a button in a form launch the right query in the DB and want to verify results of that query. Is this GUI testing? Or is this functional testing?
How can I separate the two kinds of testing if the only way to launch that query is to run the program, click on the button and wait for results?

Re: difference between usability and userinterface testing

I would say GUI testing is part of functional testing. Function testing can be any thing as long as that is a requirement. If your are looking whether the screen is positioned correctly than that is not a functional testing.

Part of the problem is the terminology floating around in the field, people are inventing new terminology for no reason and that is confusing new comers and even exp people also. My suggestion would be to look at some of these web sites if you get a chance. I am just copying some links from the other post.
