    Usability standards

We are working in a web environment and would like to define usability standards for our development teams to aim to achieve. Does anyone have any sources of information for setting usability standards for web applications?

    Re: Usability standards

Not just usability - but accessibility. That should also be a concern. Obviously the frontrunner here is the W3C, which I would recommend checking out. Specifically, check out their Web Accessibility Initiative which has checklists of usability/accessibility issues. You might also want to check out less stringent sites like http://www.anybrowser.org or http://www.webpagesthatsuck.com. There are also usage-minded sites in http://www.useit.com and http://www.usableweb.com.

If I may, I also recommend a good book about usability engineering (since it makes no sense to concentrate on usability without a process behind doing so): "The Usability Engineering Lifecycle: A Practitioner's Handbook for User Interface Design" by Deborah J. Mayhew. Very good book. Not dedicated to the Web, necessarily, but well done from a process standpoint. A good book based on the Web is Jakob Nielsen's "Designing Web Usability: The Practice of Simplicity."

Another good book, a little dated as far as the Web is concerned, is Jeffrey Rubin's Handbook of Usability Testing: How to Plan, Design, and Conduct Effective Tests.

    Hope some of this helps.

    Re: Usability standards

I posted this also in the Usability Resource but it's a really great place to start for to define some Usability standards: http://usability.gov/pdfs/guidelines_book.pdf
