Linux based GUI automation tools
Does anyone know where to get Android? I need a Linux based GUI automation tool. XRunner does not work for me cause our application is not Java based. Thanks a million!
Re: Linux based GUI automation tools
I believe Android is a tool for recording and playing back low-level events (mouse movements and key-presses). While this kind of coordinate-based approach may be okay for simple tests and automation as long as nothing changes in your GUI, I think you'll find it quickly becomes unusable as soon as anything is moved on the screen.
If you'd like to consider an alternative commercial option, I suggest you take a look at our tool, Eggplant, which works by looking for things on the screen. This make your scripts much more robust, as windows and even elements within windows can be moved anywhere on the screen without impacting the playback of the script.
Eggplant also provides the kind of rich test environment, ease of use, documentation, and support that you'd expect from a fully-supported commercial tool. And while it doesn't come for free, you may find that it costs less than the pulled hairs and hours of agony that you'll be saving. ;-)
Plus, it can test software running not only on Linux, but on any system with a VNC server.
