    process monitor for solaris

    hi all,

my company and qa group are about to begin load testing an app on a solaris box, and we need a tool that will emulate as closely as possible the perf mon on NT as far as functionality goes. The process monitor included with Solaris 8 is OK, but it either doesn't have nearly the feature as NT's perf mon, or i just haven't figured out how to activate them. I've checked on gnu.org and found a couple of open source tools, but unfortunately they still don't have what we need.

Perf. mon has what we need, but of course thats out of the question.

    any thoughts?

    Re: process monitor for solaris

    Hi,
you will not be able to get a single tool which reports the same on UNIX resources as NT's perfmon, due to different hardware architecture.

However, you will be able to get resources measurements from various open source tools tools and solaris commands.

What resource/process measurements exactly are you looking to report on?

    Regards,
    David

    Hi david.

We are looking to report CPU time, memory, virtual memory, threads etc of our process running on the UNIX/Linux box.

Can you point me to any sites that have opensource/freeware monitoring tools?

    Thanks

    Check Mercury Interactive.

LoadRunner can monitor both perfmon as well as rstat and TOP without installing anything (at least this is what they claim) on the UNIX or Linux machines

You can use the Solaris built-in commands vmstat, top and netstat to monitor things like this. Together with some clever scripting they are actually useful. We are using them a lot.

    Best regards Björn

Try proctool, it is available at www.sunfreeware.com. It is a bit crude, but you can monitor a number of variables on the server and an individual process via graphs. It does take a little while to figure the tool out.

    Re: process monitor for solaris

We were involved in testing an application
( siebel ) running on Solaris. LoadRunner
was used to drive the load and provided
    lots of good information.

We supplemented this with SAR, Vmstat,
TOP, Oracle Stats Pack and few misc. SQL
    programs.
