Hi guys,

Could you please tell me where are you doing unit testing?
I mean in QA or DEV environment.
Thanks

Re: Unit Testing in DEV or QA

Usually unit tests are done by whoever develops the code that is under test. it is sort of a side by side activity (or pre-activity in TDD).

However, in some shops, I have heard of QA taking on this. However, that feels sort of like bolting on additional overhead after the fact.

search the forums, there are plenty of threads discussing this.

I feel for better results, Developer must do and QA should verify

Re: Unit Testing in DEV or QA

Hi,

I use xUnit patterns (PyUnit) to write tests (in Python) and put them together into test suites. I use this approach to code tests in SeleniumRC.
So, I think knowledge about unit testing really pays off and at least you have one more "tool" in your test toolbox.

... both statements are of course debatable and will indeed vary by organization as well as staffing levels, skill levels, etc. - probably.

i dont think it depends upon the organization jake. Both the statements are accepted world wide. Unit testing is done by developers(they know their code best) no matter in which organization/country you are in.

I live in a part of the same world. I have experiences that tell me without a doubt that at least one of your statements is not all-encompassing - "by developers". The other statement "in DEV" is ambiguous and therefore one cannot give a correct answer.

As "QA" (QC Test Eng'r.) I have in the past developed and executed unit and unit integration tests.

In order to corroborate your statements, have you visited all of the worldwide tens-of-thousands-plus (come and gone and still there) organizations?

Additionally, I cannot subscribe to this notion, "(they know their code best)", especially where a developer must take on the responsibility for the source code of another developer.

Under this link is some related discussion.

it happens in DEV environment.--- done by developers.( unit tests his own code or others code). am sure no organization will have the unit testing done by QA team.(may be very very rare)
