1. Plz help me solve this ISTQB Sample ques on EP.

Q.Postal rates for light letters are 25p upto 10g,35p upto 50g plus an extra 10p for each additional 25g upto 100g.Which test inputs( in grams) would be selected using equivalence partitioning?

a. 8,42,82,102
b.4,15,65,92,159
c.10,50,75,100
d.5,20,40,60,80

Solution is b

Can anyone of you please explain?

Hi,
The answer is B.

Consider that you are taking the equallance class for 10G,50G,75G (50+25) and 100 (50+25+25)

You have to consider the Equallance classes as &lt;10, 11-50, 51-75, 76-100, &gt;100

So the answer b lies in all the equallance classes where as the rest of teh answers will not

You would first partition the possible data values as follows:

1. 0+ to 10g
2. 10+ to 50g
3. 50+ to 75g (more than 50g but without the additional 25g)
4. 75+ to 100g (more than 50g and with the additional 25g)
5. 100+

Then you choose input values that fit within each of the equivalence classes above.

Does that make sense?
Can you predict the expected output (rate) for each case?

Joe,Thanks to u too...i did understand now how partitions are made.But am afraid i cannot answer your ques of predicting expected output for each case? Are output rates same as output partitions?

In this case, the input is a weight and the expected output is a postal rate.

"25p upto 10g,35p upto 50g plus an extra 10p for each additional 25g upto 100g."

So, now that you have identified the input values you will use, you should be able to list the corresponding expected output values.

(Part of developing test cases is usually specifying the expected output for each input.)

Are these the output values.Am i getting it ?

0 to 10g = 25p

11 to 50g = 35p

51 to 74g = 35p

75g = 45p

76 to 99g = 45p

100g = 55p
