Hello everyone,i am from Argentina and i am finishing computer science, i am doing my thesis in V&V activities through all the software life cicle. (just manual testing, no experience in Automated testing).
I need an advice about what to do about my career.
I would like to go to the states and try to find a job there in SQA/testing, but i know that it will be hard because i am from Argentina. So i was thinking about taking a Master degree in Computer Science (so i will be a able to study for 2 years and then try to find a job)but it will be very expensive and the computer science master course is very general, and i am more interesting in Testing and SQA. So my question is What should i do?.
1)Go to US and Take a course in Testing (for example Mercury or Rational or one that you can recomend me).(will the course help me to find a job?).
2) Or try the Master in Computer Science.
I know that i am very confused right now, but the problem is that here in Argentina , testing is very new and there are no courses and organizations don't even have a testing area.
Re: career advice
Let me first congratulate you on your willingness to make such a big step to move to another country and make a new start!
As to your question, my only piece of advice is that you learn as much about computers (hw and sw) and particularly OS's as you can. Learning automated testing is definitely a nice bonus, but not necessarily something that's required -- it all depends on the product. And be sure that you really want to be a QA person. (unless of course you are using it as an eventual stepping stone to something else)
Does figuring out how something works fascinate you? Do you like taking things apart? Would it partly make your day to find that one bug that has been playing hide-and-seek with you for several days? How would you feel about testing the same product over and over again for weeks, and often late evenings and weekends? (your mileage will vary, depending on the company)
I've worked at 4 different firms doing QA for over 11 years, and the four things I've seen in good QA testers are
1) ability to learn new things quickly
2) creativity in being able to think up new ways to 'break the product'
3) being able to 'stay on course' when testing gets boring and slow.
4) Being able to communicate your ideas and your findings in a clear and concise manner.
If you have the interest and the qualities mentioned above, I think you'll make an Outstanding tester.
Let me caution you however, on the state of the economy in the U.S. Currently, as you may already know, we're not doing so well -- particularly in the computer field. I know several friends who have been in QA and are still looking for jobs. (in California and New York) A couple have been out of work since April. Most of the firms that I have friends or family at -- state that they are currently not hiring. The situation is somewhat bleak and some forecasters say that the economy may not turn around til near the end of 2002 or beginning of 2003.
I don't mean to scare you off and I'm not saying that its impossible to get a job (as I said, you're probably aware of our situation), but I just wanted to mention the above just in case.
Since you may be planning on taking classes when you arrive -- this may allow you to wait out the 'recession', so that once you're done, there are plenty of jobs. I hope so.
But I wish you the best in whatever you decide to do. Keep on visiting this site. QA Forums is a great source of information and fellowship and there are many others here who have more advice and insight than I.
