There are quite a few good things of automating the test application using eggPlant, that I have learnt over past few days. However, there are a few questions which I still share some doubts on, whether eggPlant will be able to address or not.
1. Is there an easy way to select value from a dropdown combo box, without having to code hundreds of clicks on the down arrow of combo box or by dragging the vertical bar?
2. How to extract values from labels or edit boxes or title bars? Let's say I have an order number generated in the title of my window, which is a label. How to get it?
Apart from this, I would also like to know about how to run the guided recording mode in windows version of eggPlant?
Re: Data extraction/selection issues using eggPlant
It's unlikely that you would need "hundreds of clicks" in a combo box. Keep in mind that eggPlant interacts with the SUT exactly the same way that a person does. So think through how an actual user would perform the task (hopefully not by clicking hundreds of times!). Often this involves using keystrokes (like pressing the downArrow key, for example) rather than clicking the mouse.
Extracting values from the screen is sometimes more difficult. In a surprising number of cases it is possible to copy values to the clipboard, which eggPlant can then access directly. In other cases, like a window title, it may be necessary to use a little scripted function that uses a text palette approach to "read" the value. Our support staff can help you to devise the best solution for a particular situation.
Generating scripts on the Windows version of eggPlant works the same as it does on the Mac and Linux versions. There are a number of tutorials that describe and walk you through the procedure. Or you can watch a video demonstrating how it's done, such as this one showing how to automate a Silverlight application, or other videos on our TestTube video page.
