Just curious, after a successful interview, if someone offers you the position on the phone or even in person, should you accept on the spot? What if the money isn't right? What if there are specifics you want to iron out with HR? Should these be brought up at that time, or should you ask for time to consider the position, or are both a shot in the foot?
9 out of 10 people I prove wrong agree that I'm right. The other person is my wife.
I'd say 'Thank you for your offer. I'll need to see the contract conditions before I make a firm decision.' or something like that.
HR can move in a mysterious way and include conditions no sane person would consider either relevant or necessary and which might, nonetheless, lead me to decline a job offer. Interviewing panels can sometimes agree to thngs that may be impossible for HR to contemplate. And, don't forget, the final level of remuneration is the one in the contract, regardless of any sum which may have been mentioned in interview.
BTW - congratulations on your moderatorship
I always take the approach (which I read from a Better Software article I think) is "Hurry up and say/do nothing"
When I was offered the position I am in now a couple of months ago - I expressed my thanks for it and let them know I'd get back to them within 3-5 days for me to talk it over with my wife and think on it.
If they can't accept that the individual needs to make sure the company is good for them as well as the company checking out the individual, then it isn't a place I would really want to work at again. I have a couple of tee shirts on that one already
Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results
I have never made an immediate decision on the phone unless I was happy with all the terms discussed up to that point. If there are simple questions (like what day do you want me to start?") I'd ask them at that time.
Don't forget, if you show up to work the first day and read your paperwork (which for us in the USA would be typical - all we would have received before that would have been a letter of offer) you can still say "I'm not going to sign this!" and walk out. Whether you damage your career by doing so is a call only you can make.
