# Thread: Logic Puzzle / Brainteaser Interview Questions

1. ## Logic Puzzle / Brainteaser Interview Questions

Some people like to use puzzles/brainteasers during interviews as a way to "see how the candidate thinks".

If you are into that sort of thing, this is the thread for you.

And to start things off, I'll offer the classic:

..... Why are manhole covers round?

Got any more you'd like to contribute?

A fun one I've used is:

Besides being used for writing, provide 3 alternative uses for a pencil.

3. ## Re: Logic Puzzle / Brainteaser Interview Questions

I know one guy who uses non-sequitor word associations.

Up is to Magenta

Left is to....

Why are manhole covers round?

[/ QUOTE ]I was asked this one and my answer was that a round shape provides equal weight distribution, so the required thickness can be the same on all parts. Cheaper to produce, and less likely to fail. A square shape would need more reinforcement at the corners. My interviewer informed me that this was a good answer, but not the answer (which I won't give away). I liked the question, and asked it of three subsequent people I interviewed, but none could give any response.

Your interviewer was looking for just one particular answer to this puzzle?

Perhaps the interviewer was unaware of where the question originated. What did the interviewer believe to be the correct answer?

Well bpolitizer took my answer. I discussed this with my husband (BSE, MSEE, MBA). The only other thing I thought of in addition to the above, was that round is shaped more like a "human" therefore the word "man" hole.

Anybody like that answer? Do I get the job?

Oh, and the pencil thing. I thought maybe it could be used as an approximate measuring tool. Traditional lead enclosed by wood and ended with an eraser must all be of similar length. Based upon the uniform length on an unsharpened pencil, it could be used on a desert island where no ruler existed.

My other thought was that it could be use on a fulcrum as a lever.

Lastly, I seem to remember boys back in high school (in ancient days) using pencils as launchers for folded paper "footballs." Anybody remember paper footballs, folded into triangles?

Remember, I am not the engineer, my husband is. I am the liberal arts major. Tee Hee.
