Last evening our process team met the six sigma black belts to ask to help us identifying the appropriate tools from DFSS tools for implementing sw-CMM level 4 kpa QPM,
but what their reply was that they dont deal with process and they deal only with product and very reluctant to accept that we do process improvement in order to improve the product. all our one hour time wasted in this argument itself, so i request for help from the forum members in this regard.
i want to know the appropriate DFSS tools that suits the activity 5 of the QPM kpa.
In my experience with Six Sigma (which is not necessarily every body’s) it is a program or methodology which is applied to measure quality and reduce defects resulting in doing things more efficiently and increasing Customer Satisfaction and Profitability. It is not a methodology that looks at process and makes improvements, although process improvements are very often a part of what is done. Six Sigma projects address a specific problem (very often product or business related) and identifies through a defined process how to reduce or eliminate the problem.
D – defines the problem
M – Measure the impact/results of the problem and current processes causing the problem
A – Analyze – identifies what is wrong and possible solutions
I – Improve – implementation of the solutions to improve the process or reduce the problem
C – Control – control the changes to ensure they are sustained and that the problems have been reduced or eliminated
Asking Six Sigma black belts what needs to be changed in a process to move from one CMM level to another does not follow the order they are used to as there is not an identified problem to start out with.
Six Sigma if done correctly and done well is a company wide program. CMM (once again as I understand it) addresses only the software development aspect of a company – very different to Six Sigma which if anything is customer focused. You are looking to move from a “Defined” level to a “Managed” level. You may not actually have any problems that need addressing to do this.
To quote from a book I have (Six Sigma Software Development)
“CMM can be viewed as the tool that tells development how to develop software, whereas Six Sigma shows them what to develop.”
To move into a level 4 CMM I would suggest that you look for CMM trained experts who have experience in doing this or look for Process Experts who can identify what you need to do to implement the measurements and controls to the existing processes so that the results can be predicted or managed.
