    Re: Proof of concept means

    Hi rao,
First a marketing guy will go and tell about a new tool into the company and got appointment..second the technical guy will go and give a presentation and demo on the tool with a sample application. If the company is happy with the tool feautures..the technical guy has to demonstrate further with the application used by the company with the tool and show a Demo...this is called Proof of Concept(POC)...th next step is the company will arrange for a workshop (the guys of that company work on the tool to know how ease it is to use and so and so..) Finally they will evaluate the pricing ..whether to buy the tool or not..i hope u got some idea...

    Re: Proof of concept means

There is more to a proof of concept than Thilak explains. He is more or less outlining the evaluation process, but doesn't explain what a POC really does.

A proof of concept is where the tool under consideration is actually installed at the customer site and is run against the customer's software.

Here is an example. We had a need for a load testing tool. We did some research and went through the process of arriving at a list of vendors to invite for a POC.

Each of the vendors assured us that the tool would work in our environment. we invited them to prove it. Vendor A arrived, installed the tool (took them 3 hours), proved that the tool would capture the traffic and give us results. Similar results with Vendor B, except their tool has a few more features and it took them 4 hours to install. Vendor C installed, found out that they could not decode the network traffic, and packed up after 15 minutes.

THAT is what a POC will tell you. Does it only work against their demo application on their laptops, or will it really work in YOUR environment against YOUR applications.

All the other stuff Thilak mentions (workshops, evaluation of prices, etc) happens after the POC. Therefore, the POC is simply one of many steps in the total evaluation of the tool.

    Re: Proof of concept means

Also be aware that some POC's will cost money and you will pay the Engineer's time & expenses for the visit. Some are free. This depends on the Company's location and Engineering availability etc. If you are convinced that the tool which will cost for the POC might be the one for you, it most likely will be worth the investment. If you compare the cost of a POC against the cost of Shelf-Ware, it is trivial.

    Re: Proof of concept means

Unless you have an extended POC period (like maybe a week with the application installed and no one looking over your shoulder), it is difficult to verify that all your requirements can be met. They almost certainly cannot be validated in a 1 hour POC.
