New to Selenium
Hi, I couldn't find a thread for testers who are new to Selenium, so thought of starting one thread for "New to Selenium". I want to learn Selenium. So, guys please give your ideas how to start and where to start. Initially I thought of going for a Training, but it would be better if I do some homework on my own it will be better.
So, please suggest me.
I'd probably start with downloading Selenium Builder, Selenium Builder - The next evolution, find a simple webpage. Record some actions, then export the test to the programming language of your choice. That'll give you a handle on how to instantiate, get a url, and locate elements.
After that, you'll want to take a step back and learn how to use a unit testing framework in your desired language.
From there, you can go more in depth in selenium. You'll want to learn more in depth on the topics.
* Locator strategies
* PageObject model
* How to deal with Alerts
* How to deal with Frames/Iframes
I took a slightly different approach. I downloaded Eclipse along with the Selenium and WebDriver Jar files. Once that was downloaded I followed the online documentation on setting up a selenium project in Eclipse. Next was to get the latest version of Fire Fox, FireBug and Selenium IDE and get that set up. Once I was done with that I ran some record/playback with the IDE and exported the generated code to my Eclipse project. That taught me the basics of how the code works and how objects are identified. Then I used FireBug to test the various object identifiers such as xpath and CSS.
Then the fun of teaching myself Java... But various languages are supported such as Python or Ruby and C# there are options. I chose Java since the company was a Java shop.
David has some great places to start as well.
Best of luck!
There are some selenium vedios available for new beeies to learn the basic, try to go through before you jump on unless you have basic idea.....
I recently discovered an open source project called, https://github.com/tourdedave/the-internet
Thought you might want to know. It's basically just a bunch of dummy pages with a bunch of different controls, forms, frames, pages, etc... It's a good project to use if you want to run a webserver on your local machine for learning
can i integrate selenium to jira or clearquest?
Can anyone suggest me which is best?? Selenium or QTP? Thanks in advance...
I believe the appropriate response to this last question is, "It depends."
Thanks in advance for all the guys who is helping me out in solving this problem.
Am a newbie with Selenium RC and facing a problem in executing all the test cases in a test suite created.
I have created a test suite using Selenium IDE and saved it as html.All the testcases and the test suite are saved in the same folder.Then i downloaded the selenium-server-standalone-2.40.0.jar file.
After executing the command java -jar selenium-server-standalone-2.40.0.jar -htmlSuite "*firefox" "https://example.com" "/home/ruda/Desktop/Selenium/logintest.html" "/tmp/test.html" .The server gets started and the Selenuim Functional Test runner v.2.40 is launched and all the test cases are added and displayed in the tool.Now it automatically starts running the first test case and after its passed it gets stuck in the very first test case.Subsequent test cases in the test suite are not run after the first test case.
Can anyone let me know what exactly the problem is and help me with your solutions?
@swetha: Answer to your question depends upon many factors : AUT (website or desktop), are you executing automation on single machine or multiple and so on. So first think about all then you can properly decide on this.
