Selenium RC *.JAR error

I am working through the Selenium 1.0 Testing Tools book by David Burns.

This gives the instruction to:
1. download java from http://java.sun.com (done)
2. download selenium rc from http://seleniumhq.org/download

Well there are a lot of docs listed on this page but it mentions a zip file and I am meant to be working with Java so I downloaded Java 2.0rc2 download from the relevant section.

However, in the extracted folder there are two jar files.

The first jar file: selenium-java-2.0rc2.jar

I get a "Failed to load Main-Class manifest attribute from ...path/selenium-java-2.0rc2.jar" when I try to run it.

For this first jar file error message, I have googled it and it **looks** like I need to do the following:

- create a manifest called Manifest.txt
- place this in the same location as the jar folder?
- enter in the manifest a setting: Main-Class: ????

Can anyone confirm what I need to do here? I am a .NET person and not Java so I have no idea how any of this works. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The second jar file is: selenium-java-2.0rc2-src.jar
This gives an invalid or corrupt file error message so I am guessing I don't need to worry about this.

Re: Selenium RC *.JAR error

make sure that you have set the classpath and java_home environment variables correctly.

once you set these environment variables, u can add the jar "selenium-java-2.0rc2" in your IDE (eclipse or netbeans or whatever) where u want to run your test cases. The second jar file is not required to run or add.

once u did this, u can run the server selenium-server-standalone-xxx.jar using the following command and start executing the test cases

java -jar selenium-server-standalone-xxx.jar

Re: Selenium RC *.JAR error

Thank you very much for these suggestions; I am sure you have put me on the right track

I have now the full Java Eclipse downloaded onto my laptop and following the instructions provided on the Selenium website, I have created a project whilst adding the jar files.

My book says that to complete the setting-up process, I need to run the jar file using the command shell or console.

I have tried using the command shell using:
- the java project directory and
- to the directory where I originally extracted the jar files from Winzip
but it tells me that "Unable to access jarfile selenium-server-2.0rc2.jar"

Any more suggestions for me? I have noticed the mention of the standalone jar file. I am assuming this is a previous version of the latest jar file but perhaps I should be using this instead?

Re: Selenium RC *.JAR error

Shifu, standalone jar is if you "just" need to run the server (for example, if you are using client bindings from Python).

run the server from the directory where the jar resides:
$ java -jar selenium-server-standalone-xxx.jar

Re: Selenium RC *.JAR error

Thank you very much Corey G for your help.

Unfortunately, I have no idea of what I need to run. My aim is to run Selenium IDE tests with Selenium Remote Control but I am struggling with this set-up process. I'm currently a little confused :/. I am using my own laptop which sits in a small home network.

If I type in the cmd shell
\directory\main project folder>$ java -jar selenium-server-standalone-xxx.jar
it tells me it doesn't understand the '$'
and without the '$',
it tells me 'Unable to access jarfile selenium-server-standalone-xxx.jar'

I haven't downloaded or added this file to my project however. I'm not sure where I get this file from.

I do have the file selenium-java-2.0rc2-src.jar which I downloaded from the Selenium website but when I type in the cmd shell
\directory\main project folder>java -jar selenium-server-2.0rc2.jar
I also get the error message
'Unable to access jarfile selenium-server-2.0rc2.jar'

Re: Selenium RC *.JAR error

Shifu,

sorry, don't actually type "$", that was just my example command prompt. and replace "xxx" in the filename with the proper version.

example:

java -jar selenium-server-standalone-2.0rc3.jar

does that work?

Re: Selenium RC *.JAR error

I have now put my jar files and the library physically in my java project folder and still when I type in:

c:\mydirectory\main java project folder>java -jar selenium-server-standalone-2.0rc2.jar or
java -jar selenium-server-2.0rc2.jar

I get the error message 'Unable to access jarfile .....jar'

I think from what you are saying, there is still something wrong with another setting somewhere. Maybe I should start again from scratch...

Thank you very much for your help.

Btw, if anyone has any other suggestions, I would love to hear them as I'll probably keep what I have anyway.

do you have Java installed?

http://seleniumhq.org/docs/05_seleni...elenium-server

no other setting needed (except java being installed and on your path).

Re: Selenium RC *.JAR error

Yay, it's all working!!

I noticed you refering to ...2.0rc3.jar above whereas I have been using ...2.0rc2.jar. So all I needed to do was to extract this different version and the rest as they say, is history!

Thank you very much for your help Corey
