Apologies, my intent was not to get anyone to do my work for me but rather to find a "best practices" method to share with my team since everyone's style is so different.
Currently, test cases are derived from a use case by dismantling the use case into all the input and output points and creating test cases that fulfill each of these points, as well as any "break" points.
Use Case: Customer creates a member account (where their email address is their user id)
Customer uses email already in use
Customer inputs email in incorrect format
Customer uses password that does not meet business rules
Customer's secondary input of password (for validation) does not match primary input
and so on...
I'm just trying to understand if there's an industry standard for creating test cases from a use case.
Firstly, I really liked the above article and it is very relevant to my current project.
In my current project I am trying to set up and organise the QA Process and Activities.
My question here is, can Use Case Number be used for Test Case ID?
To be more elaborate :
We have a set of Numbered Use Cases (eg UC1018_Customer Registration) and each Use Case covers one/many sub-functions in a Module. So I have numbered my Test Cases as TC(Use case Number)_Test Scenario Number_Test Scenario Name(eg TC1018_001_Open Registration Screen)
The reason I am asking this is, one of my Project Leads says that this numbering system makes traceability difficult. I have explained to him that traceability is possible because Test Cases are being derived from Use Cases, which have in turn been derived from the Requirements. He just doesn't seem to be convinced and this has really been bothering me, so I wanted to know if what I am doing is right or acceptable.
It depends on tools you are using, number of use cases you guys are having and also on Person way of thinking . For me i can clearly understand that the your written test case if from uc1018. If probably ur lead is not intending to trace testcase with UC but probably with requirement doc....
If you wish here is a use case that you can practice with and run your test case thoughts by the SQAF audience. Refer to Table 6.0 "Action Add new customer " about half way down the page. What are some test cases you could derive from step 2?
