I am currently studying for this certification. I possess CQIA - Certified Quality Improvement Associate - and have found it quite beneficial when applying for analyst positions. This certification with ASQ has global recognition. If anything, the knowledge that comes with studying for this cert is definitely worthwhile. In this profession (QA), it's really important to stay on top of your game, so to speak. The software industry changes constantly.
I think that most certifications today (there may be something I am missing and thus I cannot write ALL) mostly provide formal methodological tools and create a common working language for us all.
These 2 main objectives are extremely important and thus I think people should seriously consider these programs, but for the cutting edge knowledge I believe the best sources are still the publications, forums and blogs that are good and abundant on the Web today.
