buntydv, please be more specific there are many possible metrics and most have different useages and reasons for use. The audience for these is also variable.

Metrics are a method for measuring and displaying such things as defects per LOC, defects per cycle, number of tests implemented for test cycle, test coverage, and many, many more.
As Neill says, please be a bit more descriptive in what you are seeking.

Re: How Metric can be used in the project development

How do we improve the standards of the company by using the metrics???...
Suppose we can calculate LOC, Defects Percycle,Number of tests implemented for test cycle everything by using metrics. But how these calculations can be used in improving the Quality process.
This question has been asken in an interview.

    Thanks,

I use these to track trends and spot patterns, or odd events that are out of pattern. These trends and patterns, to improvement or not, give me the guide to make decisions and assess where we could make improvements. We can use the metrics on effectiveness or efficiency within the processes and can use the historic trends to identify breaks or deviations that require rectifying or further investigation to harness the benefit of the deviation and quanitify and qualify there in the context of the business.

Re: How Metric can be used in the project development

I heard about size oriented metrics and function oriented metrics....but my question is how the size oriented metrics can be used in improving the quality process..i would appreciate if anybody can give some examples on this.

    Thanks,

Re: How Metric can be used in the project development

Size metrics, IMHO, alone cannot be used as a quality quide. If these are done in conjunction with the other metrics they make more sense.

On size metrics alone an increase in size may mean more code is created therefore more chance of errors creeping in, this may also indicate an increase in complexity hence more errors - but for me in and of themselves they have little meaning without the context.

Re: How Metric can be used in the project development

    Buntydv,
We can't improve the standards of a company by metrics alone. The metrics have to be targeted to the senior management and they have to accept them as indicators of their business effectiveness. Only then can metrics play an important role in structuring the processes which can develop around them. Unfortunately metrics can be made to indicate both negative and positive results. They alone are not proof positive that something is working or not working. Think of metrics as the gauges on your automobile. They are only as effective as the person behind the wheel and his/her response to them.

Re: How Metric can be used in the project development

To weigh in on this topic.....

Metrics (and measures) are information. They can be used and abused just as any other information can be used and abused.

Decisions can be made with full information or no information. I have never seen either of those extremes in practice and suspect that they may be asymptotic.

Generally there should be a direct relationship between the appropriateness of the decision and the information available to make the decision. Little information and/or poor information should lead to weak or bad decisions.

While difficult or even impossible(?) to measure, there are often business/political drivers in the decision making process. I am one who tends to believe that we all tend to have a personal bias that filters the best of information streams. Therefore, it is better to admit that the bias exists and allow for it.

Decision making by numbers only is very similar to "Management by Objective". IMHO, "good" metrics building includes data about the impact of a metric on the culture. It should also include discussion on how to end-run the metric and/or misuse it.

Which process must always end with a Dilbert type reference to the output coming from what will be measured and used (against) the employees - "gonna build myself a mini-van today".

Finally, size metrics are like other metrics. By themselves, they are not terribly useful. In the wrong hands, they are dangerous. Used in balance with other data, invaluable.
