The CMM (Capability Maturity Model)for Software are the principles & practices which help Software companies to improve the maturity of their Software.
You can have a look at this website which explains the five levels.
SEI-CMM Levels are given for the Software Companies, this is to maintain some common standards to operate. Software Engineering Institutes -Capability Maturity Models main objective is to make Immature models to Mature models. In the process we have some levels to pass. SEI-CMM Level1,......Level5,LevelI.
Under each Level you will have some Key Process Areas(KPA's).
Each KPA again will have one or two objectives depending the Stategy followed by the concerned organizations. But on a whole KPA's are 18 in number and add 2 more when u include CMM Level I too. What are the different KPA's under each level and related literature you can find in the book "Software Engineering".
