Having worked in a few places that aspired to CMM nirvana, I feel CMM can sometimes be destructive in terms of assuming, somewhat a priori, that there are "levels" to maturity in the way that it has formulated them. As such I suppose I have to answer that I see it much more as a journey, just as I see "quality" as a whole. I definitely do not see it as a "destination" and I think that is, in fact, one of the harmful points of the CMM, at least in terms of how people perceive it and how it is utilized. However, this question is somewhat loaded in that it presupposes CMM to have the journey or the destination. I can make that same journey and yet still not take the path that is allegedly carved by the CMM. Mind you, I am not necessarily "anti-CMM" in all respects. I just want people to take a moderated approach to it.
