N9AMT here. That's a nice little HT. For a metro area with lots of repeaters it should work good. Not to good for any distance though. 5 watts is a bit puny and most of the VHF bands are pretty much line-of-site. What's the price on that toy??
As for the test, you no longer have to learn code so just read the book and take the sample test questions.

I have the "Now You're Talking - Official ARRL License Manual" - started going though it and doing the test questions a while back, then got too busy at work and home... [img]images/icons/frown.gif[/img]
It is easy to follow and extremely interesting!!
