# Thread: Weekend Puzzle - Interview question!

1. ## Weekend Puzzle - Interview question!

OK, this is an interview question...

Problem:
You have 10 bags of Gold (not that would be really called a problem)

Each bag has 10 coins which weigh 1 ounce exactly.

One of these bags has imperfect coins which weigh 0.90 of an ounce each.

You have a scale... (You can have any type of scale)

Challenge:
With one use of the scale, you need to figure out which bag has the imperfect coins. Now the scale gives only 1 reading only, so you cannot keep adding or removing bags from it.

No you cannot figure it out with your hands!

Hint. "I did say you can use any type of scale"

AJ: Suresh, OK you got it right! But let others take a crack at it!

Do not post your answer if you figure it out! Just email the answers to me

Here's another one on similar lines. The rich Caliph of Baghdad has a 1000 bottles of wine. One day, a servant poisons one of these bottles out of spite, but confesses his crime to the Caliph.

The Caliph has a problem now - he is hosting this grand banquet for his state guests the next morning and needs to locate the poisoned bottle in the least amount of time.
He decides to make prisoners drink a sip from each bottle.

What is the minimum number of prisoners he needs for the task ?

Apologies - I just remembered another portion of the problem I posted. The poison takes quite some time to take effect - like 12 hours. But the caliph has just that much time to get his prisoners to taste all 1000 bottles of wine. So only one prisoner can't do the job.

The trick is to use as less prisoners as possible - humane reasons, no doubt!

Hint: Essentially its pretty much the same thing as AJ's problem, albeit with royalty thrown in

Don't you hate it when they change the requirements after you have started testing?

hehe...I've heard that one before. I didn't share that with the other people in my office, but the "missing pound" riddle had them quite stumped for a while. I'm not sure it's a good idea to try this one out on them!

Er, I thought it was going to your email but it didn't. So tell me how and I'll send it.
