What would have happened if we passed a tax increase?
<ul type="square"> [*]So locally we voted down a property tax increase by a 2:1 margin. [*]Two weeks later we get a notice that our taxes went up by more than 6% over last year's. [*]The same notice showed that our property value decreased by 20%. [/list]
Ohhhh, man! That sucks. See this is like one of those trick questions that come out every once and a while to test your patriotism. See, you're in a recession, so every state that votes down a tax increase has their taxes increased and property values dropped. Every state that votes FOR a tax increase gets their taxes dropped and their property values increased. Any surplus goes directly to the politician that guessed the right square on the matrix of how many votes for and against.
Well in MA they can only increase property taxes by 2.5% a year, so they are limited in what they can do for property tax increase - usually town by town they can vote on exemptions. Most don't pass though.
