Vinyl to MP3 via USB

It's about time, but still a bit costly:

Now maybe I can dump those old records.

Re: Vinyl to MP3 via USB

In any case, USB is nice, but any turntable can be connected to the line input of a PC (though those with dynamic cartridges need a preamp - battery-powered, from Radio Shack.) I've been digitizing stuff from records for years. My challenge right now is the 78's. I havea couple of old decks but they have been sitting in the garage so long they are frozen up and need dismantling, cleaning and lubricating. (And I even have a set of 16 2/3 rpm disks, which might be a greater challenge because my decks are only 3-speed.)

I've been recording my vinyl to mp3 for many years too. It is just slow because you record real time. I guess that is good because I can listen to those tunes as I record. Brings back the memories!

You know that the old 78's are really 80's don't you?

I didn't know that RS still sold the preamps. Mine died a while back.

I've been recording from record vinyl to mp3 since '99

my process is:
- connect turntable to mixer/phono-preamp
- connect the mixer to audio-in (line level) on my pc sound card
- fire up my recording software (soundforge) and set the levels
- record to WAV format
- normalize the WAV and convert it to mp3 using LAME encoder

Yeah, Rich, I've been eyeing this, too. My local music shop, Twist n Shout has them for sale.

I admire the folks who know what to buy at Radio shack and how to use it but I'm looking for something simple, but worth it.

Maybe they don't any more, Rich. I took a quick look at the web site and I didn't see it. I bought mine a few years ago.

You're going to have to explain that one. I had a vague recollection that some old records were, in fact, something other than 78rpm (maybe 80). But I thought the bulk of them were actually 78. I'll have to dust off a few and look at them (I have some that are REALLY old - we're not talking the 40's here --- Feodor Chaliapin, Beniamino Gigli, Enrico Caruso on single-sided 10" and 12" records.)
