    Rate a thread

    Hey,

I've noticed that the rating function is not often used, and when it is, it's by just one or two people.

Are you using this function? When are people choosing to rate threads?

Have you ever considered going through the threads that were most useful to you on a topic or in a forum and giving them a rating to stand out?

I know there are threads, particularly in the QTP forum, that get referred to over and over. It seems like those would be good candidates for a high rating.

    Re: Rate a thread

I don't use the rating system. Reason: back when I started on the forum, several posters would rate their own posts (usually the typical "what is x" or "how do I do y" questions) with 5 stars - thinking it would get them looked at quicker.

It quickly diluted the stars meanings.

In forums I frequent, the threads that are most useful have been make 'sticky' by the moderators and are therefore the top ones in the list view - one is usually an FAQ with links to posts 'referred to over and over'. I think that's sufficient.

    Just my opinion of course.

I see that still, although not as much as for a while there. When I do, and it clearly is that and not someone being impressed, I rate it as well - as low as I can...

I, too, share the opinion that the really useful threads become sticky or get assimilated into FAQs...

    Re: Rate a thread

    I don't use ratings.

I find them rather useless, given the varied opinions, skill levels, interests, and backgrounds of members here.

We get violent disagreement on even simple processes and terms. How we could expect any kind of agreement on the rating of a post beats me.

When they were first introduced at SQAForums.com, I checked out some of the highest-rated posts. I saw nothing that justified such a rating. I suspect only the originator had such a high opinion, or perhaps guessed that a higher rating would result in quicker responses.

    Ouch!

I don't think this thread is a 5 star, and I didn't give it any rating, but I don't think it's entirely useless!
