Re: Your take on upcoming Intel CPUs for MacBooks? .
I won't be replacing my 17" G4 PowerBook with a MacBook Pro until Apple resolves the heat and power management issues with the current crop of MBP motherboards. In the 22 years that I have owned Macs, I have finally learned to be patient and wait for the 2.0 version of any hardware or software products.
Several of my coworkers have replaced their Stinkpads with new MBPs, running both the Mac OS and several Windows operating systems using the Parallels Desktop virtualization software. One of my coworkers recently had their MBP motherboard upgraded by Apple to resolve the whining noise issue that others have complained about.
The 20% performance gain with the Merom 64-bit dual core chips will be nice, but not at the expense of limited battery life and excessive operating temps.
My guess is that Apple will continue to use the 32-bit Core Duo chips in the consumer level MacBooks, while the pro level MacBook Pro will receive the Merom 64-bit dual core chips.
