# Thread: anyone else hooked on Sudoku??

1. ## anyone else hooked on Sudoku??

Sudoku
certainly helps to warm your brain on a cold winters morning. Even better when you beat a developer to finish it

2. ## Re: anyone else hooked on Sudoku??

Can't say I'm hooked. But I did spend some time considering how I'd write the code that solves them

I've only looked at it the once but managed to get obsessed with it 'til I solved it.

I WILL not be beaten!

Can you tell me more about this game? I can't get to that site. is it analogous to Go or something similar?

Thanks

Pete, I'm going to have to quickly forget I saw this post so that I don't spend my work day trying to code something up to solve it. By brute-force there are 7 billion combinations accounting for the ones already filled in. Looks like around 410,000 possible solutions for an empty grid. I think it would hurt my brain too much to keep up with which numbers had been used and try to pull the next valid one. I would probably create an array of all possible solutions and scan it until the given numbers matched.

The array of all possible solutions might be the fastest method, assuming all valid solutions were pre-generated.

Another method would be to recursively add numbers, beginning with maybe the top-left corner, verifying that each is a valid placement before moving on. Somewhat a brute-force method, but you aren't going to go through all 7 billion combinations.
