    Introductions

I only registered today, so I'm not too sure on the etiquette for this forum, but in every other online community I've been involved with it's been normal practice for 'Newbies' to introduce themselves...

My name is Rachel (as you may have surmised) and I'm located in the UK - not too far from Bracknell, Berkshire.

I work for a large American software company, whose share price has just plummetted (rats), and I'm a System Test Team Leader, leading a team of nine people, in a System Test department of about twenty-five people.

I'm one of four test team leaders in the department, and I'm not entirely certain how I ended up team leading. My manager (who is in charge of such things as Training and Configuration Management as well as System Test) asked me if I wanted to do it, and I said "No chance!" and he said "Well, you've been doing it for two months so you might as well have the title..."

We currently don't have a Test Manager - I get the distinct impression that my manager wants me to do it, which I am resisting since I don't feel I have enough experience in my current role! (I'm a little worried he's going to pull the same trick again and 'promote by stealth'...)

This is my third Testing job - I left the first when I came to the end of my contract, then was made redundant from the second...

Welcome to our group Rachel - there are some other bio threads around as well - they're pretty old - but here's one that I found:

    Hi Rachel!
Welcome. I think you're doing just fine on the etiquette.

This particular forum is a hodge-podge of off-topic stuff that might or might not catch your interest.

It sounds like you've got some experiences to share on your work and processes on some of the other QA forums as well.

    Oh - I'm Jean, and I talk a lot.

Oh yeah, and high to you Rachel. What is your specialty in testing?

    Re: Introductions

    Daniel_S - thanks!

allogene - I'm not sure I have a test specialty...

In my first job I was taken on as a Y2K tester, but ended up exclusively testing bug fixes. That meant that I couldn't become specialised in any particular part of the system - I had to adapt, and be able to learn about particular business processes with minimal documentation.

In my second job, I worked on a performance management tool, which collected data from routers and switches etc. and drew graphs of network usage among other things.

Now, since I've become a team leader I don't get much opportunity for doing any actual testing. I just get mired in requirements documents and spreadsheets, using the metrics to try and figure out how long it'll take to test some new requirement!
